The Tower's Story

In the 16th century much of Italy was under control of the Spanish.  "Catholic" Europe was under continuous  attack along its  Mediterranean border from the Moors.   In response to these attacks, the Viceroy Don Pedro di Toledo ordered the construction of 339 watch towers along the coast in a continuous line of sight.  This line of sight enabled warnings to be rapidly sent along the coast, ensuring timely defense preparations.

Most of these towers over the centuries have been lost for various reasons - mostly neglect and theft of the materials for other local projects.  Torre Normana, with its 2 meter thick walls, remains defiantly dominating the coast just outside the small town of Capitello.  It sits amidst acres of gardens, terraces, patios and tennis court in a beautiful wooded area abruptly above the beach. Panoramic views include the immediate coastline to the ancient port of Scario dominated by the mountains of the Cilento, and across the clear blue waters of the Golfo di Policastro to the cliffed coast of Maratea.
